Abstract
The subject of repentance in relation to human happiness and perfection means returning to the path of guidance; accordingly, it has been analyzed and studied as one of the basic and main teachings of divine religions on different occasions and from different perspectives and dimensions. The similar or different attitudes of divine religions can help to understand this concept more deeply; accordingly, in this article, we have tried to compare the concept of repentance in the Holy Quran and the Bible using a qualitative method and a content analysis approach. The results obtained in this comparison indicate that in both the Holy Books of the Quran and the Bible, repentance is introduced as a return from evil deeds and sins, and the results resulting from it are forgiveness of sins and achieving happiness and salvation and reaching eternal paradise; however, the differences, while being comprehensive in the Quranic statement, are related to several basic issues: according to the verses of the Quran, repentance is related to human sins; however, according to the Bible, in addition to sins, repentance is also included in the inherent and natural sin of man. According to the verses of the Quran, repentance is divided into two types: the repentance of a servant and the repentance of a worshiper; but such a division does not exist in the Gospels. In the Quran and Islamic tradition, there is no intermediary between man and God for repentance and divine forgiveness; but in the Christian tradition, the church system is the intermediary for forgiveness and grace. There are also differences between the Quran and the Gospel in the obligation and conditions for accepting repentance.
